SPOOLWORKS

A Place for Makers

Fine fabric. Inspired classes. Exceptional machines.

An old craft deserves a modern home. SpoolWorks is a creative studio for quilting and the needle arts, made for anyone with the itch to make something real. Come in curious. Leave with something that lasts.

Opening 2027 · The Castro · San Francisco

The Studio

A time honored craft. A modern home.

People have always turned cloth into comfort and hours into heirlooms. SpoolWorks brings that tradition to San Francisco: one studio where retail, teaching, professional finishing, and community live together. A place to put the phone down, put your hands to work, and be around good people while you do it. Start something here. Finish it here.

Fabric & Supply

Deep stacks of modern solids, quiet Japanese linens, and small batch prints, alongside the thread, notions, patterns, kits, and tools the work deserves. Curated with care, stocked for real projects.

Inspired Classes

From first stitch to fine craft. Corporate events where your team makes a quilt together and keeps it. Date nights on machines threaded before you arrive. A full calendar running from never touched a sewing machine to advanced quilting, sashiko, and hand embroidery. Every skill level has a door in.

Longarm & Service

Professional longarm quilting and honest machine repair. Bring us the quilt top that has been waiting in your closet since 2019. We finish things here.

Exceptional Machines

Sewing, quilting, and longarm machines worth growing into, sold and set up by people who sew on them every day and answer the phone when you call.

Our Story

Two generations, one thread.

Brian Dickinson

Founder

Brian grew up in his mother's ceramics shop and studio, where he learned early that a good workroom is its own kind of home. Twenty years running operations for technology companies came next. Then quilting found him, first as a craft, then as a lifeline. Now he is building the room he wishes had existed when he needed it.

Devi Lanphere

Co-Founder

Devi has been making things her whole life. Thirty years a quilter, a longtime quilt shop instructor, and the former owner of a beloved ceramics studio in Felton, California, where Brian grew up underfoot. Most days you will find her at the front of the classroom, still getting a kick out of the moment a first seam comes out straight.

"When people make things with their hands, they build more than quilts. They build confidence, connection, and community. That is the business we are in."

Before We Open

Be part of the founding chapter.

Every shop like this begins with a small circle of people who wanted it to exist. Join the list and you are in that circle. Here is what it gets you.

The Soft Opening

Before the public gets a look, the list gets a night. An early evening in the finished shop to see the space, meet us, and christen the classroom.

First Seats

The opening class calendar goes to this list before it is published anywhere. Beginner series and date nights fill fastest. You register first.

Founding Membership

A limited run of charter memberships, offered to this list first when the doors are ready: opening perks, priority registration, and your name in the shop as one of the people who made it real.
